Dermatology FAQs

Our skin is the body’s largest organ, so it’s important to take care of it. Whether you’ve turned to our dermatologists for care before or this is your first time, you may have questions about dermatology, the services we offer, or about your skin. You’ve come to the right place.

What does a dermatologist do?

Our dermatologists Dr. Sherer and Dr. Coven are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions and diseases that impact the skin, hair, and nails. From warts and athlete’s foot to acne and wrinkles, we can treat a host of issues impacting the health and appearance of your skin.

When should I visit a dermatologist?

If you notice new or worsening symptoms, or if you are dealing with persistent skin problems such as acne or patches of dry flaky skin, then it’s worth it to make an appointment with our dermatology team. While home remedies can be effective for certain skin problems, if your issues are more serious then at-home care may not be enough. We offer a wide range of diagnostic tools and treatment options to improve the health of your skin.

How often should I get skin cancer screenings?

Everyone, no matter their risk, should come into our practice once a year for an annual skin cancer screening. This screening simply means that you’ll come into our office so that we can examine your skin more closely from head to toe. We can even check areas such as the back of the head that may be harder for you to examine. While you should be examining your skin once a month for any suspicious growths or changes in your moles, leave the comprehensive skin cancer screening to us.

How is acne treated?

Many people deal with acne. In fact, it’s one of the most common problems and it doesn’t just affect teens. We see adults of all ages in our practice who are having trouble getting acne under control. Everything from diet to stress can cause acne to flare up. If at-home acne products just aren’t cutting it, our team can help. We can recommend new dietary changes or new skincare products. We can also prescribe hormonal contraception and other medications to help target and improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe acne.
