Is Botox treatment what you need to get a more youthful appearance?

Before you turn to our Huntington and Hicksville, NY, dermatologists Dr. Daniel Sherer and Dr. Todd Coven it’s important that you understand more about Botox and what it can, and can’t, do for your appearance so you can decide whether you would like to consider Botox treatment. Here at Long Island Medical & Cosmetic Dermatology, we offer a wide range of cosmetic services that can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Here’s what you should know about Botox:

What’s being injected into my face?

We think it’s only fair that patients fully understand what is in these injections so they can decide whether this is a treatment they feel comfortable with. Botox injections contain a purified, medical-grade form of diluted botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes the muscles of the face.

How does it stop the muscles from contracting? When Botox is injected into muscle groups of the face, it temporarily blocks nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract. This immediately softens the appearance of lines and wrinkles that appear when making facial expressions. When performed by our team of licensed dermatologists here in  Huntington and Hicksville, NY, Botox is completely safe.

It only takes a couple of minutes to administer Botox, which is another reason people turn to us for this cosmetic treatment. Patients don’t need to take time off work and they can return to their routine immediately after. We have even performed Botox during our patient’s lunch break or after work. While we can numb the area prior to administering the injections, the needles are so thin that patients easily tolerate them without any issues.

When will I notice results?

It takes about 3-4 days for patients to see smoother, younger-looking skin. Since the muscles are inactive, they can’t pull at the skin to create the formation of new lines or to make fine lines and wrinkles worse. Results typically last up to 6 months. If you love your results, you can talk with our team to find out how often you should come in for maintenance injections to keep your results looking new and fresh.

What type of wrinkles does Botox treat?

Botox won’t be able to treat all fine lines and wrinkles. It works best on wrinkles that develop due to muscle contractions (referred to as “dynamic wrinkles”). These are the lines and wrinkles that seem to pop whenever you smile, laugh, or squint. Botox is great for treating:

  • Frown lines around the nose and mouth
  • Furrow lines between the brows
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)

If you are interested in finding out whether Botox treatment is right for you, turn to our Hicksville and Huntington, NY, dermatologists today for a no-risk consultation. To schedule an evaluation, call Long Island Medical & Cosmetic Dermatology at (631) 271-2769 or (516) 433-3200.

Often, as people age, their confidence levels drop. A constant battle is being raged against fine lines and wrinkles in both women and men alike. Fortunately, there is a highly effective treatment available from dermatologists at Long Island Medical and Cosmetic WrinklesDermatology in Syosset, NY called Restylane.

What is Restylane?
Restylane, a line of a gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, is a revolutionary way to treat fine lines and wrinkles, and even plump lips. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the human body, and, when injected into the face or lips, has been proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

The Restylane line has several different products, including:

  • Restylane: This is used to add volume and smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and skin folds.
  • Restylane-L: This product is regular Restylane combined with lidocaine, which reduces pain and discomfort associated with the treatment.
  • Restylane Silk: Made up of smaller and smoother particles of hyaluronic acid than the other Restylane products, Restylane Silk is used in the lips and surrounding areas of the mouth to produce a natural looking fullness of the skin and plumping of the lips.
  • Perlane: Using larger particles of hyaluronic acid, Perlane is better for more severe wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection.
  • Perlane-L: The same as Perlane, but with added lidocaine to make the experience less painful.

How does a typical treatment appointment work?
After an initial consultation with the dermatologist, an appointment is made to inject the Restylane under the skin using an ultra-fine needle. The healthcare provider will prepare the area of the skin to be treated, and then inject the clear gel used in Restylane products underneath the skin. The gel then attracts and bonds with water molecules in the skin tissue to maintain fullness and volume. Results usually last 6 months, with some patients seeing results for even longer.

There is little to no downtime associated with treatment though the patient may experience some mild discomfort afterward, including swelling, redness, pain, bruising or tenderness. These side effects typically disappear in less than 7 days for nasolabial folds, or “laugh lines”, and less than two weeks in lip treatments. Patients under 35 are more prone to swelling, and patients over 35 are more prone to bruising, however, both may occur. To promote the fastest healing time, it is recommended to avoid both sun exposure and taking aspirin or ibuprofen. Using cold compresses on the injection sites can also promote fast healing.

If you are suffering from irritating and stubborn fine lines and wrinkles or would like to add fullness to your lips, Long Island Medical and Cosmetic Dermatology in Syosset, NY can help. Visit to schedule a consultation and learn more about the Restylane line of products today.

We are all looking for ways to achieve younger, healthier-looking skin. While there are no magic remedies or spells that can give us youthful skin forever, there are some rather wonderful healthy-skin promoting products out there, and some of them could be as close as your pantry.
If you’re a green tea drinker, you may already know the host of benefits it touts. However, did you know that green tea is also great for the skin? Even if you didn’t, it might not come as such a shock. In fact, you can also buy topical green tea products to help fight common skin conditions:
  • Skin sagging
  • Wrinkles and other signs of aging
  • Sun damage
If you’ve been known for your fair share of soaking up summer rays, topical green tea in addition to sunscreen could actually boost sun damage protection. And with its well-documented anti-inflammatory properties, green tea’s polyphenols can help slow down the signs of aging.
So how can you incorporate the benefits of green tea into your healthy-skin lifestyle? It’s as simple as visiting our office. Our dermatology practice near Syosset offers a wonderful skincare line that perhaps you’ve even heard of—Sherer Dermatologics.
What you put into your body is just as important as what you put on your skin. We offer both a green tea cleanser and cream that could enhance and improve your skin’s overall appearance.

Green Tea Fortified Cleanser

A lot of cleansers you find in the aisle of your local pharmacy are chock-full of chemicals. Frighteningly enough, some of these chemicals can even be found in common household cleaners. Who wants to put that on his/her face? That’s why Sherer
Dermatologics is all-natural. This cleanser is also soap-free, so you can enjoy a gentle, deep-cleaning lather without worrying about drying out your skin. With simple ingredients like Vitamins A, C, and E, as well as Green Tea, White Tea and Co-Q10, this product does a great job of fighting wrinkles and damage while also remaining gentle on sensitive skin.

Green Tea Cream

If you’re looking for a rich moisturizer without all the chemicals, then turn to Sherer Dermatologic’s cream. Its high concentration of green tea polyphenols makes it easy to combat and ward away signs of aging. These polyphenols combined with caffeine will keep redness and puffiness at bay, while the tannins in caffeine also offer a skin-tightening effect. Plus, the cream is teeming with antioxidants, which as we all know, help repair damage to your body’s tissue by combating free radicals.
If you’re looking for a dermatologist in Syosset, then give us a call. We have a skin care product to fit your needs, as well as a variety of treatments and procedures to get your skin looking as great as you feel.
Are you in love with Sherer Dermatologics? What changes have you noticed in your skin since using these products? We would love to know how this skincare line has helped your skin!
